- Microsoft Word 3.0 can do everything you ask except changing the fonts
- selectively (at least I don't think it can). While the math language is
- not exactly WYSIWYG, it is fairly powerful. For example, the fraction
- (x+y+5)/(x-y-9) could be typeset nicely with '.\F(x+y+5,x-y-9)' The
- '.\' is actually <command><option><`\`>. You see the above notation
- when the show paragraphs options is on, and when it is off you see the
- formula proper.
-
- You can do integrals. For example, the integral from a to b of f(x) is
- '.\I(a,b,f(x))'. You can nest formatting commands. E.g. the integral
- from a to b of c/d would be '.\I(a,b,.\F(c/d))'. Word 3.0 also does
- matrices (any kind of brackets you want, including different right and
- left if you desire!), summations, and you can overprint any character.
-
- I have tried to do math WYSIWYG, and somehow all of that font changing
- is so inconvenient that it is worth using notation like Word 3.0's to
- save time (at least til someone comes up with something really new and
- innovative). Also, unlike TEX, you CAN look at the nice versions of your
- formulas while you are editing.
-
- My experience in math typesetting only covers MS Word 3.0, so there
- might be other, better programs out there. I do, however, recommend
- Word for consideration.

- I will be travelling to Jordan next week for a two month stay. I plan
- on taking my Mac 512 along, but was recently told that there are
- problems with the US power supply (burn-outs), requiring a $900
- replacement of the analog board (local prices). My prior experience in
- Jordan, with an Apple II Plus, which had a convertable 220/110 power
- supply, tended to indicate that power wasn't such a big problem. Then,
- as now, the official Apple line is that there's a rather large tolerance
- for cycle and voltage variation (+- 40 volts). Has anyone any
- experience using US macs in a 240v/50hz environment, particularly in
- Amman?

- Please send email; I will acknowledge replies if messages are received.

- One final plea for help. I have a
- couple of old davong (serial) hard disks, and Mac512e, recently upgraded
- from plain 512. The disks ran fine under the old (4.2) system and

- except now the volume manager crashes (error id=02) when it is run. Try

- I have a question as to how the keyboard maps to the font on MacPlus.
- For example, if Option-e is followed by one of a,E,e,i,o,u,or Option-e,
- the two key strokes will be mapped into one 8-bit character. Option-e
- followed by E will be mapped to 83 (hexadecimal). I wonder what will

-
- Adding a bit to the chorus of cries about MS Word 3.0 - What do they
- think they're doing with printing?
-
- It appears that there is no way to print in high-quality mode on an
- Imagewriter. The buttons just aren't there in the print dialog box.
-
- Now, I have to sympathize. As some of you may realize, high-quality
- printing on the Imagewriter is a *total botch*, courtesy of Apple.
- Still, isn't this a bit drastic?
-
- Second, there is no way to set MS Word 3.0 to believing you wish to
- print in "tall adjusted" mode. This is normally an option in Page Setup,
- but they've moved it to Print, which means you don't see the horizontal
- spacing when editing that you will get when printing with tall adjusted
- set. If they are going to get rid of high-quality Imagewriter output,
- the only use of an Imagewriter is for Laserwriter drafts, for which tall
- adjusted mode is essential.
-
- Still, it looks like a powerful package if they fix the problems.

- From: fdot@sphinx.UChicago.UUCP (Tom Lippincott)
- Subject: Obscure cursor bug
- Date: 16 Mar 87 02:38:33 GMT
- Organization: U Chicago Computation Center
-
- The Bug:
-
- I have a bug in a program I'm writing which leaves cursor images lying
- around the screen. This is fine for drawing forests, but it obscures
- the intended purpose of the program.
-
- The Symptoms:
-
- The problem occurs when I have a task in the vertical retrace queue,
- only when that task calls a drawing command, and apparently only when
- the interrupted process is drawing near (or possibly only under) then
- cursor. Where the interrupting task is drawing has little or no effect.
- It doesn't leave a cursor on every interrupt, but the frequency of the
- error increases with both the frequency of the drawing in the
- interrupted task and the frequency of the interrupt. I've only tried
- situations where the interrupt either always draws or never draws. If
- the cursor is holding still, and the program repeatedly draws under it,
- I can tell when the problem happens because the cursor stops flickering.
- Occasionally (maybe 1/300) the cursor left behind is slightly
- disfigured.
-
-
- The Unsuccessful Attempts:
-
- Hiding the cursor during the interrupt (and restoring it at the end)
- makes the cursor flicker, but has no effect on the bug.
-
- I have no doubt that hiding the cursor during the interrupted process
- would cure the problem, but this would make things like menu selection
- difficult.
-
- The interrupt procedure saves and restores every global variable that I
- know of that it changes; in particular, it saves and restores the
- grafport, and has a private window of its own to draw into.
-
-
- The Theory:
-
- First, the main program issues a drawing command.
- Quickdraw realizes that the cursor is over the thing being drawn,
- hides the cursor (hence the cursor flickers when being drawn under)
- by restoring the area from an "under the cursor bitmap",
- and stores the fact that it hid the cursor in some global variable
- (which is unknown to me).
-
- While Quickdraw is performing the actual drawing, the interrupt hits,
- issuing a drawing command elsewhere.
- Quickdraw checks whether the cursor is over the thing being drawn,
- finds that it isn't, and clears the variable that says so.
- It completes the command normally.
-
- Next, the VBL interrupt handler calls the cursor drawing routine,
- which restores the area under the cursor (to little or no effect)
- and draws a new one
-
- Quickdraw finishes the initial draw, saves the freshly drawn area into
- the "under the cursor" area (with the cursor), and redraws the cursor
- (this time the redrawing has little effect).
-
- Now, the "under the cursor" area is the same as the normal screen, so
- the cursor cannot be erased. (And the cursor can't flicker any more
- if you're holding the mouse still.)
-
- The deformed cursors would come from Quickdraw continuing to draw over
- the cursor after the interrupt.
-
- The Fix:
-
- The fix by this theory would be to save and restore the cursor-hiding
- variable during my interrupt.
-

-
- Help!

- Is there any way to get a circumflex added to any character other than a
- vowel? Specifically, I need to use it over y's (necessary for Welsh).

- Has anyone on the net heard anything about "Falcon" an F-16 Combat
- Simulation program that was supposed to to be available in August 1986?
- Now that it's March '87, I'm beginning to wonder?
-
- It was suppossed to simulate:
-
- " -True to life head-up display
- -Flight characteristics of the real F-16
- -True feel of fly-by-wire
- -Carries true armament of F-16
- -See digitized images of enemy Migs
- -See landscape, plane, and esting to me, if they can really pull all of this off.
-
- The program was being written by Spectrum Holobyte (the same people who
- did Gato and Orbiter).
-
- If you have any info, please let me know....
-
- Thanks ahead of time!

-
- Also, in general, what would I have to do to set up my own include file
